Joseph had started to learn Russian and improve his Armenian. Wanting to know more about that country, where he would live, he began to take Armenian history courses. He was greatly amazed to learn that Armenia was the first country in the world to accept Christianity in 301, during the reign of Trdat III (287-330). He also learnt that the Armenian alphabet was created by the monk Mesrop Mashtots in 405. Reading about the Vardanants War waged against the Persian yoke in the 5th century, Joseph was overcome with pride. He was also amazed to learn about the Book of Law written by Mkhitar Gosh in 1184. One of the passages of the book reads: “No one must be judged according to their social status but only based on their acts.”
